Guest Post: Melika Lux on Corcitura

Corcitura by Melika Dannese Lux

Corcitura.  Some call it hybrid, others half-blood, mongrel, beast.  They are all names for the same thing:  vampire—the created progeny of the half-wolf, half-vampire, barb-tongued Grecian Vrykolakas, and the suave but equally vicious Russian Upyr.  Corcitura:  this is what happens when a man is attacked by two vampires of differing species.  He becomes an entirely new breed—ruthless, deadly, unstoppable…almost.

Audiobook + Movie Review: Matilda

Read by Sarah Greene

Synopsis: Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a kid-hating terror of a headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!

My Thoughts: I cannot believe that it took me this long to "read" this book! I've seen the movie multiple times when I was younger but never took the time to read the book. I'm very glad that I finally did because this was a marvelous book. It has become a new favorite of mine.

Starting 2014 with a read-a-thon was such a great idea. Though I didn't read everything I hoped to accomplish, I was still able to get a few books for review off my list.

Here's what I read:

Review: The Hoop Kid from Elmdale Park by Teko Bernard

The Hoop Kid from Elmdale Park by Teko Bernard

All Bernard Jones wanted to do while staying with his grandparents for the summer in Elmdale, his father’s childhood hometown, was work on his basketball skills. When Bernard excitedly enters a team into the Annual Elmdale Park Basketball Tournament, he’s shocked to discover that the future of the park is at stake. The town of Elmdale hasn’t won the tournament in 20 years, and Victor Franco, a ruthless millionaire, is planning to shut down the annual tournament for good so that he can turn the historic Elmdale Park into a landfill for his own profit. It can all be stopped if Bernard and his team, the Elmdale Warriors, win the tournament this year. Can the courageous Bernard and his fun and wacky crew defeat their Oakdale rivals and save the historic Park?

Review: Turning This Thing Around by Keith Maginn

Turning This Thing Around is an inspiring memoir of overcoming personal struggles. This brutally honest, deeply personal account of redemption takes readers on a moving spiritual journey. Confronted with a myriad of obstacles–a debilitating arthritic disease, narcolepsy, anxiety and depression–the author was outwardly happy, but inwardly miserable.

Pushed to the lowest point of his life, he discusses how he gradually turned things around and used his experiences to grow as a person. Supplemented by quotes from Gandhi to Dr. Wayne Dyer to Eckhart Tolle, Turning This Thing Around has universal themes that speak to nearly everyone, as we all must face challenges as part of being human. It is a self-help memoir of sorts: The author discusses not only what he had to overcome, but how he did so–and how others can, too.

Review: An Unlikely Pair by Monya Clayton

An Unlikely Pair by Monya Clayton

Lisa Forrest is a gentle, plain, working girl, president of the local environment committee, and to her trust is the most important thing in the world. She cannot trust this man.

She knows she isn’t pretty, so he can’t possibly be attracted to her. Then why does he constantly seek her company? Does he want her to compromise her principles, come down on his side when his latest project endangers a virgin wetland?

He learns too much about her for her comfort. Yet she knows nothing about him. And if she does discover the secrets of his past, will the knowledge be too much for a tender hearted woman to bear?
