Share-a-Tea 2017 Reading Challenge Sign-up

Look at what I stumbled upon! A reading challenge with TEA!!!! I love tea. I drink tea when I wake up, when it's cold, when it's hot, when I'm reading, when I'm studying, right before going to bed, listening to music...Basically, I drink tea all of the time!

This Share-a-Tea 2017 Reading Challenge is hosted by Becky's Book Reviews.

So what is this challenge about?

#ShelfLove Challenge Sign-up

Shelf Love Challenge 2017

I have tried to participate in a few TBR challenges in the past but they did not always work out. Their scheduling or extra activities were something I could not keep up with. They usually stressed me out. So I needed to find another TBR challenge that I knew that I could participate in while working on my teaching credential. And I think I found the one!

The #ShelfLove Challenge is hosted by Second Run Reviews and Chapter Break. The goal is to be more responsible in how you grow your TBR pile and read the books that you already own. Yup, only your books on your shelves count.

Friday Posts, 12/20/16

Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice and Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. The idea is to share a sentence or so from the first page and the 56th page of the book you are currently reading!

http://images.gr-assets.com/books/1413706054l/18007564.jpgBeginning: I'm pretty much screwed.
That's my considered opinion.
Screwed.

Page 56 (or so...It's hard to tell with Overdrive on Nook): Yeah. This all sounds like a great idea with no chance of catastrophic failure.
That was sarcasm, by the way.

Library Love Challenge Sign-up

2017 Library Love Challenge

The Library Love Challenge is hosted by Angel's Guilty Pleasures and Bea's Book Nook. Since all of my audiobooks come from the library and I practically live at the library, I figured that this would be a challenge that I can do. Here's the gist of it:

"If you love to read and/or listen to books then you also love to buy every book you want to read. And, well, that puts a hurt on your wallet. Checking books (print, ebook, or audios) out from the library can save you LOTS of money and in most places getting a library card is FREE."

The Twelve Dogs of Christmas by David Rosenfelt

I was hoping to finish this by Christmas but the holiday simply had me busy. But hey! At least I finished it! :)

http://images.gr-assets.com/books/1458483538l/28220750.jpgDefense lawyer Andy Carpenter usually tries to avoid taking on new cases at all costs. But this time, he’s happy―eager, even―to take the case that’s just come his way. Andy’s long-time friend Martha “Pups” Boyer takes in stray puppies that the local dog rescue center can’t handle, raises them until they’re old enough to adopt, and then finds good homes for them. Not everyone admires the work Pups does as much as Andy does, however. With Christmas just around the corner, one of Pups’s neighbors has just reported Pups to the city for having more than the legal number of pets in her home under the local zoning laws.

Andy happily takes Pups’s case, and he feels confident in a positive outcome. Who could punish someone for rescuing puppies, after all, especially at Christmastime? But things get a lot more complicated when Randy Hennessey, the neighbor who registered the complaint against Pups, turns up dead. Pups had loudly and publicly threatened Hennessey after he filed his complaint, and Pups was also the one to find his body. All the evidence seems to point to Pups as the killer, and suddenly Andy has a murder case on his hands. He doesn’t believe Pups could be guilty, but as he starts digging deeper into the truth behind Hennessey’s murder, Andy may find himself facing a killer more dangerous than he ever imagined.

Mini Reviews: Audiobooks...Al Capone & Finding Audrey

I have fallen behind on many reviews, so I am trying to catch up. Instead of writing full reviews on books that I have read weeks or months ago, I decided to give a quick thought on them instead. So here are two audios that I listened to that I actually liked:

Photo from South Whittier Library's Facebook

Yesterday, November 21, 2016, I was able to attend the grand opening of the long awaited local library: the South Whittier Library! I have waited patiently for over a year for the new library to be finally opened. I have to say, it was worth the wait!

Mini Reviews: Cinderella Part 2- Silly Children Stories

Man...I had these posts ready weeks ago and I completely forgot to publish them. Whoops!

Anywho, I have read a few children's books for my student teaching. One of the units that I covered with my students was on fairy tales. The unit began with a modern tale of Cinderella. It was cute that I then decided to focus on the various ininterpretations of this classic tale. Here are two silly ones that I read:

Mini Reviews: Cinderella Part 1--Halloween Children's Stories

Since I am currently working on getting my teaching credential, I am not only reading a bunch of textbooks and articles, but many children's books as well. We started a new unit in our language arts, where students get to learn the elements of a fairy tale. The unit began with a modern retelling of Cinderella. So I decided to read a few variations of this classic tale. Let's begin with the Halloween themed ones:

Children's Book: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

Life with his little brother, two-year-old Fudge, makes Peter Hatcher feel like a fourth grade nothing. Fudge is actually a tiny terror in disguise, causing mischief everywhere he goes. Whether Fudge is throwing a temper tantrum in a shoe store, smearing mashed potatoes on the walls at Hamburger Heaven, or trying to fly, he’s never far from trouble. He’s an almost three-year-old terror who gets away with everything, and Peter’s had it up to here!

When Fudge walks off with Dribble, Peter’s pet turtle, it’s the last straw. Peter has put up with Fudge for too long. Way too long! How can he get his parents to pay attention to him for a change?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame Musical

Hello readers!

So this past Saturday, my brother and I decided to cross-off an item from our bucket list: to go see The Hunchback of Notre Dame! I've been wanting to see this musical since it premiered in Germany back in 1999. When I heard that it was playing at the La Mirada Theater for the Performing Arts (which was just a few minutes away from me), I knew that I had to jump at the chance to catch this production. And I am so glad that I did!!!

Watch the trailer above for the highlights of the musical.

Little Free Library Adventures #3

Hello everyone! I have been occupying myself with work, dance, and of course school these past few weeks. I have not been able to focus on any reads or writing any posts since there has been so much on my mind lately. But I figured that I should at least post one of my Little Free Library adventures that I had a couple of weeks ago.

My good friend got married on August 20th in Santa Barbara, California. I made the two hour trip to witness my friend's most memorable day as well as be part of her wedding (I was a bridesmaid). My plan was to drive back home that same night but my mother forbid me to do so in fear that I would be too tired to drive home. So, the good daughter that I am, I decided to listen to her and found an hotel in Ventura (it was too expensive to stay in Santa Barbara for just a few hours of sleep).

I have never been in an hotel room all by myself before so I was excited to take advantage of it and try to sleep in. However, my busy mind did not allow me to. I was up at seven in the morning and couldn't find a way to relax until checkout time at 12. By 9 am, I couldn't stand the quiet and the thought of being alone in a strange room.  So I decided to look up the LFL map to see if there were any stops nearby. There sure were!!!

Romeo and/or Juliet by Ryan North

"Okay, so the only way you could be reading these words right now is if you (SOMEHOW?) ignored all the very clear instructions to make a choice, and instead (again: SOMEHOW??) thought you were reading a regular book in which you can just sit back and enjoy the ride and never ever get to make any choices."
~Ryan North, Romeo and/or Juliet

Romeo loves Juliet. Or Rosaline. And Juliet loves Romeo. Or Viola. Or Orlando. It's Shakespeare as you've never played him before.

In this choose-your-own-path version of Romeo and Juliet, you choose where the story goes every time you read! What if Romeo never met Juliet? What if Juliet got really buff instead of moping around the castle all day? What if they teamed up to take over Verona with robot suits? Whatever your adventure, you're guaranteed to find lots of romance, lots of epic fight scenes, and plenty of questionable decision-making by very emotional teens.

All of the endings—there are over a hundred—feature beautiful illustrations by some of the greatest artists working today, including New York Times bestsellers Kate Beaton, Noelle Stevenson, Randall Munroe, and Jon Klassen.

The Eyes of Kid Midas by Neal Shusterman

Again...I've been lagging with my reviews. I did not log in to blogger in over a week. Since I read this one a while back, this will be a quick review. I think...lol

What if a seventh grader could have everything he wanted? He'd make ice-cream cones materialize out of nowhere and zap up every video game he'd ever wanted, right? But what if he was also tired of being bullied and all it took to change that was to put on a pair of sunglasses? Kevin Midas's new look is more than just for style -- he's out for revenge!

My Thoughts: I have enjoyed reading Neal Shusterman's books before. So when I came across this book at a library book sale, I quickly snatched it up. This was a quick and easy read meant for middle schoolers, but even the older folks could enjoy this one.

Audiobook: The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury

“When you reach the stars, boy, yes, and live there forever, all the fears will go, and Death himself will die.”
~ Ray Bradbury, The Halloween Tree

Read by Bronson Pinchot
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61+8tnHIC-L._SL300_.jpgDuration: 3 hours 11 minutes

On a Halloween night, eight boys are led on an incredible journey into the past by the mysterious “spirit” Moundshroud. Riding a dark autumn wind from ancient Egypt to the land of the Celtic druids, from Mexico to a cathedral in Paris, they will witness the haunting beginnings of the holiday called Halloween.

Ray Bradbury’s evocative prose and imagery will send shivers of delight—and spine-chilling terror—through listeners young and old, long after the last candle has died in your jack-o’-lantern.

Graphic Novel: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

A quick review :)
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51J37sdX7qL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg
When Jacob Portman was a boy, his grandfather regaled him with stories of his fantastic life at Miss Peregrine's home during the Second World War, even sharing photos of the remarkable children with whom he resided. As Jacob grew up, though, he decided that these photos were obvious fakes, simple forgeries designed to stir up his youthful imagination. Or were they...?

Following his grandfather's death - a scene Jacob literally couldn't believe with his own eyes - the sixteen-year-old boy embarks on a mission to disentangle fact from fiction in his grandfather's tall tales. But even his grandfather's elaborate yarns couldn't prepare Jacob for the eccentricities he will discover at Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children!

Audiobook: The Bookseller by Cynthia Swanson

“In that other life, I am the center of my world. Of course, I love and care about other people—many other people. But at the end of the day, my thoughts and actions are mainly about managing my own life and my own emotions.”
― Cynthia Swanson, The Bookseller

Read by Kathe Mazur
Duration: 11.5 hours

High Summer Read-a-thon Wrap-up!

The High Summer Read-a-Thon was hosted by Seasons of Reading. I enjoyed this one a lot because it was laid back. I could go on my own pace yet at the same time it encouraged me to finish some old reads and start on new ones.

So here were my goals:

Read 2-3 physical books
Listen to 2 audiobooks

Did I accomplish them?

I finished reading these (no reviews yet):

Little Free Library Adventures #2

Hello everyone!

I was asked to cover some belly dance classes at the Atomic Ballroom in Irvine, California this past Saturday. I had a lot of fun teaching the three levels of dancing and I got a good workout out of it. With all the adrenaline running through my veins, I decided to go on another small adventure in search of Little Free Libraries (especially since I am hardly in the Irvine area).

So I ended up stopping at two:

Four Friends by Robyn Carr

I finished reading this last week and I am barely getting to the review. *sigh* Better late than never. :)

http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388340124l/18668375.jpg

Gerri can't decide what's more devastating: learning her rock-solid marriage has big cracks, or the anger she feels as she tries to repair the damage. Always the anchor for friends and her three angst-ridden teenagers, it's time to look carefully at herself. The journey for Gerri and her family is more than revealing—it's transforming.

Andy doesn't have a great track record with men, and she's come to believe that for her a lasting love is out of reach. When she finds herself attracted to her down-to-earth, ordinary contractor—a man without any of the qualities that usually appeal to her—she questions everything she thought she wanted in life.

Sonja's lifelong pursuit of balance is shattered when her husband declares he's through with her New Age nonsense and walks out. There's no herbal tonic or cleansing ritual that can restore her serenity—or her sanity.

Miraculously, it's BJ, the reserved newcomer to Mill Valley, who steps into their circle and changes everything. The woman with dark secrets opens up to her neighbors, and together they get each other back on track, stronger as individuals and unfaltering as friends.

Cover Reveal: Colourblind by B.L. Wilde

Hello friends!
It has been a while since I have participated in a cover reveal. I am actually not accepting any reviews or any types of promotions right now due to my hectic personal life.

HOWEVER...I couldn't say no to this new book.

I have read the Seductors series by B.L. Wilde and I have LOVED them! When I heard that she had a new book coming out and that it was not an erotica, I knew that I simply had to get my hands on it!

High Summer Read-a-Thon!

Okay, I saw Sarah over at Flood of Books join this read-a-thon and I figured, why not? I've been doing horrible with my reads. I've only been reading 1-2 physical books and listening to 1-2 audio books per month. This is no bueno!

The High Summer Read-a-Thon by Seasons of Reading is pretty laid back. She does not require you to constantly update, which puts me at ease knowing that I don't have to post something even if I have not accomplished anything. However, she does expect a wrap-up post. This means that I really must get my read on!

Little Free Library Adventure #1

I used to visit a Little Free Library behind our Herbie's store years ago before I knew what Little Free Libraries were all about. I thought it was just a neat way of sharing and trading books for free that the store created. However, I stopped visiting Herbie's once Sprouts opened up in my area and I completely forgot about the book trade...until I visited the blog, Captivated Reader.

When she visits a new area, Captivated Reader likes to stop by the nearest Free Little Libraries. I thought this was a neat idea! I commute and travel often, so I should do it too!

Being inspired by Captivated Reader, I decided to blog my little adventures as I visit these cute little book stops.

My first adventure...my neighborhood (sorta)!!

When I looked up on the Little Free Library site to check for the nearest libraries, I was stunned to see how many there were.  So my sister and I decided to hit four for now on our way to a cafe.

This one was our first stop:

Summer Reading Program 2016

Have you joined the Summer Reading Program at your local library?

I know many libraries hold the annual reading program and the one here at the Los Angeles County, it has upgraded. What do I mean? Well, it is more interactive for the adults now. :D

I remember being envious of the awesome children's and young adult's programs that the libraries ran. These programs had games and neat prizes for the non-adults. The only thing that the adults had were review opportunities with the chance to earn either a pen or a mug. At the end of the program, about 5 adults from ALL of the LA County's libraries will win an iPad. Do you have any idea how many libraries are in LA?! Jeesh.

Graphic Novel: Katrina Hates the Dead by Russell Nohelty and Juan Frigeri

What would you do during the Apocalypse? How would you survive?

Those are the questions that have plagued Katrina for years. All the good boys and girls were raptured up to Heaven, leaving the rest of humanity to ask a single, solitary question: "Why not me?"
Hellspawn rose from Hell and rampaged across the world, eviscerating all they came across. It was bedlam, Hell on Earth. There was nothing anybody could do to stop it.

Then the Hellspawn got bored, and settled for a quiet life in the suburbs. They squatted in the homes of the people they once mercilessly murdered.

And that's where Katrina Hates the Dead starts. Humanity survived the rampaging demons, and now has to work and live alongside them. They steal all the good jobs, and leave humanity cowering in squallor...

Audiobook: The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

“The Bible did not arrive by fax from heaven. The Bible is the product of man, my dear. Not of God. The Bible did not fall magically from the clouds. Man created it as a historical record of tumultuous times, and it has evolved through countless translations, additions, and revisions. History has never had a definitive version of the book.”

― Dan Brown,
The Da Vinci Code

http://covers.audiobooks.com/images/covers/full/9781415934777.jpgRead by Paul Michael
Duration: 17 hours 6 minutes

While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. While working to solve the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci -- clues visible for all to see -- yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.

Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion -- an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others.

In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who seems to anticipate their every move. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's ancient secret -- and an explosive historical truth -- will be lost forever.
